The Annex Grand (Re)Opening & Fine Art Friday

Friday, September 23 | 5:15-8 pm | Bush Barn Art Center

After a five year Access Art Project fundraising campaign and eight months of extensive renovations, the Annex at the Bush Barn Art Center will reopen to the public this fall at a special event. The unveiling of the space will take place at 5:30 pm and will include the opening of an elevator connecting to the Bush Barn’s second-floor gallery. This new addition, along with other improvements, makes both buildings compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards for accessibility.

The Annex is a newly redesigned venue for learning about, creating and showing art. As a multi-purpose space, the Annex features a dedicated studio for an Artist-in-Residence program, and a separate area for art workshops, exhibitions, classes and other programming which will evolve with the needs of the community. The building will also function as the new headquarters for the Salem Art Association’s Community Arts Education program, which serves two primary roles: to provide arts education and artist services.

A temporary exhibition titled looking forward: LOOKING BACK will be on view in the Annex during the event. Through audio interviews and visual art from past Salem Art Association (SAA) artists and administrators such as Carl Hall, Charles Heaney, Sara Swanberg, Nancy Lindburg and Bonnie Hull, visitors will be able to reflect on the history of the organization and imagine what the future will hold for this exciting new space. Art by Andrew Myers, Eric Tautkus and Chris Casarez will also be on view.

Coinciding with the Grand (Re)Opening will be the SAA Annual Meeting at 5:15 pm and Fine Art Friday from 6-8 pm at the Bush Barn Art Center. Come celebrate three exhibitions featuring art by April Waters, Bets Cole, Frank Miller and Anton Pavlenko. Guests can also enjoy a free lecture with April Waters and Bets Cole at 6:15 pm. Refreshments will be provided by the SAA Gallery Guides.
