Salem artist Susan Truebood Stuart has spent her career exploring the Oregon landscape through dynamic and visually powerful watercolor paintings. Her upcoming retrospective, titled Susan Trueblood Stuart - Wind, Water, Spirit: 66 Years of Painting, provides an in-depth look at a lifetime practice. Grounded in a deep appreciation for the natural world, Trueblood Stuart’s work builds on the Oregon landscape tradition established by artists such as Carl Hall, Constance Fowler and Nelson Sandgren. Her paintings transcend the pictorial to become highly charged responses to the physical world and its constant change.

Jonathan Bucci, Collections Curator at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, and Curator of this exhibition says, “Susan is not looking for easy solutions in her work, she is always pushing herself and the work she is making now is some of the most powerful work of her career.” A survivor of multiple bouts with cancer, Trueblood Stuart’s story is just as inspiring as her art. When viewing her paintings, it’s not hard to see that this is an artist who sees great beauty in the natural world, and who finds profound solace in its rendering; from peaks to valleys, and everything between. Exhibitions at the Bush Barn Art Center are free and open to the public.

Trueblood Stuart is a graduate of Willamette University with a BA in Art and holds an MFA from Oregon State University. She has had numerous solo exhibitions in venues throughout Oregon, including: Bush Barn Art Center, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Fairbanks Gallery at Oregon State University, Anderson Gallery, Karin Clark Gallery, Onda Gallery, OMNI, Lewis and Clark College. She is also held in numerous private collections.
