Ecola State Park, Cannon Beach

Ecola State Park is one of our favorite places to visit on the Oregon Coast and one of the best places to hike anywhere in Oregon. It wraps around Tillamook Head and hikes include an 8-mile stretch of the Oregon Coast Trail.

The views at Ecola are spectacular, and you can hike down to the beach on well-maintained, though sometimes steep, trails. Wildlife, especially birds, are abundant.

During our last visit we saw a beautiful hairy woodpecker right next to the trail that was not at all bothered by us walking just a couple feet from him.

The park entrance fee is $5 per vehicle for day use parking or $30 an annual Oregon State Parks pass. It is free to walk or bike in. Restrooms and picnic tables are available. You can camp at Ecola State Park, or treat yourself to one of the amazing places to stay nearby including:

Directions to the park from Portland:

  • Take Highway 26 West to U.S. Highway 101 toward Cannon Beach.
  • Take the exit for Ecola State Park and follow the signs.

Parking most times of the year isn't a concern, but during July and August can be crowded, so it's best to arrive early if you are visiting during the summer.

For more information, call Ecola State Park at (503) 436-2844 or visit their website by clicking the Book It! button.
