Yaquina Head Lighthouse

From exploring tide pools teeming with life to witnessing Oregon's tallest lighthouse, there is something for every visitor at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area in Newport.

The Yaquina Head Light, also known early in its existence as the Cape Foulweather Lighthouse, is one of the brightest lights on the planet, visible at a range of over 20 miles. It was produced in Paris in 1868 and shipped to Oregon via Panama, before the canal was built. It was assembled on site from hundreds of prisms and first lit in 1873. Staffed day and night for nearly a century, it was automated in 1966. It is active with an identifying light characteristic of two seconds on, two seconds off, two seconds on, and 14 seconds off.

Tours of the historic lighthouse are available most days, and naturalists offer interpretive programs in the Visitor's Center and natural areas.

Although it's free to walk or bike in to the 100-acre site, there is a $7 fee for a 3-day pass to drive in.
