Silver Falls State Park - Trail of Ten Falls

Yes, there really are ten falls on this hike.

This 8.7-mile loop takes hikers through part of the Silver Falls State Park in Silverton, which is known to feature some of Oregon’s most impressive water features. While the trail is open year-round, late spring is the ideal time to make the trek, when the paths are drier and the forest is exploding with new growth. It’s also a moderately easy hike, with only about 1,300 feet of total gain.

Trail visitors can also enjoy a stop at the South Falls Lodge, which offers rustic seating and a café. The hike is also a favorite site for photographers (including historically June Drake, a Silverton-area photographer who led a 20-year campaign to make the area a state park). Don’t be surprised to see tripods being set up at - or sometimes under - the many impressive waterfalls.

Hikers should note that not everyone has the stamina to make the full loop, and that each waterfall has its own trail for those looking for a more relaxed adventure. Dogs – even leashed – are forbidden, and it’s recommended that strollers and small children do not attempt the trail, although there are parts of the park that are great for all ages.

Directions from Salem:

Take OR-22 E to exit 7, then OR-214 E for 15 mi. Enter park at toll booth, and continue to South Falls Trailhead at parking area F.

Rates are $5 for a day-use vehicle pass, $30 for an annual Oregon State Parks pass. You can also get a campsite for $19/night and there are a variety of facilities that can be reserved.

Love this hike! Even just visiting part of Silver Falls State Park and one or two of the falls is well worth it for folks who don't have time to do the whole loop.

Such a beautiful hike! If you're in that area for the first time, be sure to stop and check out Silverton. (Or stay in one of Silverton's B&Bs and make a weekend out of exploring the town, Silver Falls State Park and the Oregon Garden!)

Well said, Dena--we love Silverton! Great little library, visitor center, and access to the river in the middle of town, too. :)
