Three Fingered Jack Peak: Canyon Creek Meadows

Does the name Three Fingered Jack sound interesting?

If so, hit the road and wander through the Canyon Creek Meadows on a moderately easy hike that takes travelers past the base of the colorful and craggy Three Fingered Jack Peak. It’s a beautiful alpine hike with a spectacular spread of wildflower in high summer. Only 7-miles there and back, with options for more adventurous side trips.

The loop starts at Jack Lake after a rough drive up to the trailhead, (make sure your vehicle is sturdy enough to make it!) and gradually climbs in elevation. Eventually it opens up to a stream-fed meadow and old alpine forest. From here hikers can loop back to Jack Lake. Otherwise, they can scramble up a non-maintained trail to the upper meadow. This takes one to a glacial tarn, a beautiful mountain lake, with spectacular views of Mt. Jefferson in the distance.

This is a great summer hike, especially if you’re interested in seeing the wildflowers in all their glory. Not to mention, there’s a convenient 0.7 mile hike to Wasco Lake, which is open to swimmers. Parts of this area are damaged by wildfires, but there are pockets of camping areas around Jack Lake.
