Camp up a tree level at the Pickett Butte Fire Lookout, a historic lookout located in the Umpqua National Forest of southwest Oregon. The butte is named after a homesteader – William Pickett – who lived in the area in the early 20th century. And while the original lookout tower was erected in 1934, it was replaced in 1948 by the current tower, which stand 40 feet tall.
Pack well for your stay at this tower – you’ll need plates, utensils, and bedding for the double bed. Be prepared to haul your own water also.The place is equipped with a stove, a propane heater, and a mini-refrigerator and has enough sleeping space for four. It’s a compact space, measuring 12 feet-by-12 feet, but offers a cozy, elevated camp stop for travelers who dream of sleeping next to tree tops.
From the lookout tower (at 3,200 feet), you'll have great views of the Jackson Creek Drainage in addition to the peaks of the Rogue-Umpqua Divide. Sunrises are guaranteed to be spectacular. The road to the tower is open for much of the year, although sometimes closes under heavy snows. Be sure to check road conditions prior to your arrival.
