Powell's City of Books

Powell’s City of Books is a favorite Portland attraction, occupying an entire city block and containing over one million books! The gigantic book store is organized into different colored rooms, so follow the signs to the room that contains your key interest or just roam from color to color!

Powell’s makes it their business to know everything there is to know about exciting new novels, classics, research materials, publications and Portland information. You can ask their friendly information desk anything about these topics and they will make sure you get the answer.

Powell’s stocks gleaming, hard bound copies of your favorite literary masterpieces, as well as inexpensive paper backs and used copies. If you have books you would like to sell or trade, you can do that at Powell’s, too. Powell's is a great place to purchase calendars, magazines, games and Portland souvenirs.

Additionally, Powell’s hosts a plethora of literary events, hosting renowned authors like Cheryl Strayed and Ursula K. Le Guin for readings, organizing a variety of book groups and writing workshops and even inviting families for kids’ story time! Since Powell’s is gigantic, and there is an in-house coffee shop, World Cup, many visitors like to spend several hours (or days?) exploring. If you are travelling with folks who are not book nerds (or not as much!), Powell’s is in the center of the Pearl District, which is a trendy district filled with boutique shopping, microbreweries, coffee shops and places to score a delicious treat.

Some fun things to explore at Powell’s City of Books:

  • There is an entire children’s section, designed to expand the imagination and encourage playtime.
  • Powell’s is a great place to start researching a hobby, including cooking, sewing, decorating and crafting.
  • Powell’s travel section has maps from all over the Pacific Northwest, the nation and the globe.
  • Favorite secret spot: next to the travel section, Powell’s has an entire shelf of childhood favorites (Dr. Seuss, Curious George, etc.) in different languages. There are also bilingual versions!

So true, Merlin! Amazing place, and I love the author talks, too.
