Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park

If you’re heading out to visit the Oregon Coast in the Lane County area, you should check out the second largest overnight camping park in the state. Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park is not only conveniently located close to the seaside city of Florence (about three miles), it’s also an ideal campsite.

The area has a slew of amenities, including swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, sand boarding, all-terrain vehicle access and over 200 campsites. Its location between the Pacific Ocean, a cute coastal town, and the Oregon wilderness make this park a great place for a multi-day adventure.

In my experience, the highlight of the park is Cleawox Lake. As someone who’s a little leery of heading into the ocean for a swim, this freshwater lake surrounded by sand dunes on one side and forest on the other is the perfect alternative. Take my advice and jump in the clear water for a swim, then dry off under the Sun on the sand dunes.

This park and its campsite is a favorite for families and groups for good reason, and on any given summer day it can attract as many as 3,000 people. There are clean bathrooms and showers, summer tours, playgrounds, interpretive programs at the amphitheater, and activities galore. Book well in advance, as campsites can get snatched up three to four months ahead of time.

Note that for convenient rentals, the state park lodge store is open from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. They have everything from pedal boats and canoes to paddle boards and kayaks to rent. Call in advance to make sure the equipment you need is available.
